Speaking From Experience – Part 2
The advice and experience from a trusted friend is always helpful, particularly when selecting the best method of providing a safe living environment for our pets. Living in a neighborhood that requires you to keep your dog confined within the perimeter of your property can be a challenge; however, pet containment systems are a great alternative in meeting this challenge much to the satisfaction of you, your neighbors and most importantly your dog.
My friend knows this from experience in keeping her beloved dog Cartman safe and sound. In part two of our conversation (see Part 1 in previous blog), Cartman’s mom answers more questions.
Q. Do you have concerns about the “shock” factor of using an underground dog fence?
There are concerns. Of couse I don’t want to hurt my dog, he is my baby. However, the collar does not shock immediately. When he gets within a certain range of his boundary the collar beeps to let him know his is getting too close. If he contnues to edge closer, the beeping becomes faster before sending a shock. Once he learned his boundaries, he now knows by the beeping sound if he is getting too close. As a matter of fact, it is rare that he gets shocked now.
Q. What are the pros and cons of having a wireless fence, and would you recommend it to your friends?
I would definitely recommend this to friends. The underground fence has been a life saver for us and our dog. It keeps him safe in his own territory while letting him in essence run free within his lot. However, there are a few cons with the system if you don’t have another form of fence in use. We have not experienced any of these cons because we also have a chain link fence. However, just having the underground fence does not keep other animals or people from wondering into your pet’s space. Also, the underground fence lines must be buried. We were able to just run the lines along the chain link fence. We have had to replace sections of the wire due to weather and animals (birds and squirrels) chewing on the lines. But purchasing a wireless fence would eliviate any of this problems.
